Best concert ever

Tonight’s David Byrne concert was quite possibly the best concert I’ve ever attended, right up there with Queensryche. I kid. Actually, it was more akin to the Alice Cooper show I saw last summer. I mean, it was a show. Dancers, backup singers, harmonies, craziness, and three encores. And what made it better was that B. really enjoyed it, too, which was great because he’s really the reason we went. We may not have any music in common, but what music B. does like I want to participate in with him, which is why we saw Steely Dan. David Byrne was a much, much better show. Then again, I am more likely to enjoy art rock over yacht rock.

Man. It was such a great show.

Sundays these days

I really, really miss the days when B. was home on Sundays. He’s been working Sundays for many months now and I generally spend Sundays intending to do a lot of stuff and doing none of it and often feeling sick or depressed. I don’t understand. I really should have gone swimming today.

My function at the party was to be one of the warm bodies who doesn’t quite interact with the birthday boy because she is not family nor great friend, but I recognize the importance of that role and had a pretty good time, met a couple of interesting people, while drinking an insanely generous pour of wine. Like, a bowl of wine. Now I just feel guilty about missing the work obligation, but I think I made the right choice.

I’m watching a Frontline that I’ve kept on the DVR for months now. It’s about the number of prisoners in the U.S. who have mental illness. They’re released, and rarely anything good happens. There are few services available to these people. I’m looking in their eyes on the TV and I understand a part of them. I see them pacing in their cells and there’s this desperation that I know. And they talk about the medication that they stop taking because they believe they’re healed and I get that, too.

So much more needs to be done for these people. I suffer from anxiety and I know that it can take over your life but I am lucky that all it does is hurt me, and usually that’s only mentally. I don’t get violent. But these people are violent because of what is in their heads and Iunderstand a little piece of what they’re going through and it upsets me more than you might know.

I do not have faith that this weekend is going to go well

1. I hate not having anything to do on the weekend.

2. But what I hate even more is having stuff to do on the weekend that I don’t want to do even if it’s stuff that sounds like fun to other people. For instance, a birthday party. I was half-heartedly (I think) invited to the birthday party of someone who pisses me off on a regular basis, but I said yes because it’s a bar that I can handle and I didn’t think I had anything else going on. But now I have a work obligation (something ELSE I don’t want to do) and this guy pissed me off greatly this week, so I guess I’m just not going and doing the work obligation, which I also don’t want to do. So I feel guilty about not going on one hand and dreading the thing I have to do on the other.

What a terrible way to spend a Saturday: guilt and dread.

Chicago

We have hastily decided (as we always do, let’s face it) that we’re taking a summer road trip to Chicago. It’s surprisingly easy to get there; I’m surprised we haven’t considered it before. We’ll spend a night in New Orleans, a night in St. Louis (with a stop in Memphis for a lunch of ribs and more ribs), then five hours later we’ll be in Chicago.

Here’s what I know of Chicago: Oprah, Second City, John Cusack, the wind, pizza.

While I’m excited to see another of the great American cities, I’m already like, “is this going to be boring? Is this going to be me gaining five pounds of pizza weight?” It sounds like a lot of museum-going. The Chicago Botanic Garden looks lovely.
